This is old news but such a crazy story that I thought it worthy of mention. Perhaps the most appalling console game ever devised, Atari’s 1982 Christmas clanger ET, is to be dug up from where it was buried in Mexico following the sales flop that was probably responsible for the death of the Atari 2600 console. According to urban legend, several million unsold copies were sunk into concrete – Atari declined to say how many – but a few of the cartridges will be rescued for posterity.
After reading the BBC article, I gave our kids a lecture on how fortunate they were to have their Super Smash Mario games etc, etc. ‘How bad was it?’ the children ventured. We had a look at the gameplay and were spellbound for – literally – seconds.
